Clear Cut Engineering received an order to design and supply a custom jig and support stand to assist in the coupling and uncoupling of a coupler adaptor during train maintenance operations.
One of the key challenges was the requirement to securely mount the stand onto a mobile lifting table to allow for ease of transport and accessibility. In addition, the stand needed to safely operate at a height of approximately 1.9 metres on uneven road surfaces. By leveraging advanced CAD design tools and the extensive experience of our engineers, we were able to precisely calculate and implement the optimal centre of gravity (CG) required for structural stability. This design allowed the coupler adaptor to be safely coupled onto the train with minimal manual effort, significantly reducing maintenance time.
In parallel, Clear Cut Engineering also designed a simple transport stand to support the coupler adaptor during the uncoupling process. The contact points were fitted with specialised rubber strips to ensure the adaptor could be safely supported during transportation without damage.
Scope of Work
- Designed and supplied a custom jig and support stand for coupler adaptor maintenance
- Engineered a secure mounting system for integration with a mobile lifting table
- Calculated and optimised the centre of gravity for stability at 1.9 metres on uneven surfaces
- Designed an additional transport stand with protective rubber contact points
- Completed fabrication and conducted a full test run within a tight schedule
Outcome
The final solution improved safety and accessibility during coupling and uncoupling operations while significantly reducing maintenance time. Despite a compressed timeline, the project was successfully completed within one month, including testing, meeting all functional and safety requirements to the client’s satisfaction.
